Wanted: Script Writer
Internal scripts can be a very helpful. It is a way for us to sort of prepare for interactions and anticipate other peoples' reactions. It is also a really easy way for communication problems to occur. When two people with two different scripts try to get on the same page, it can be like two people speaking different languages. Imagine one person with an internal script writer who favors Victorian romance and one person who favors a more direct, instruction manual type style. It is very easy for misunderstandings and hurt feelings to happen. The bigger issue is being able to address a misunderstanding in a calm and not angry way. It is so much better to simply take a step back and think " this is not on my script, did so-and-so mean it like however it seemed" but so much harder. Especially when you are the hurt party. I know that communication, good communication takes time and work. It is easy to give up on, but so very important to work towards. I know that even people who have been married for a long time can have miscommunication, but I also know that people can work together and grow towards better communication. It is important to remember that not everyone has the same script writer. And, as my Dad and Mom remind me, never attribute to malice what can be explained by simple stupidity (or poor timing, or miscommunication).
